When tension is constant, it stops registering. A shoulder that has been braced for years doesn’t feel braced — it just feels like your shoulder. The holding becomes the baseline, and the baseline becomes invisible. There’s nothing to compare it to.
This is why so much of the body’s protective work goes unnoticed. Bracing, guarding, breathing a little high in the chest — these patterns run quietly in the background, and because they rarely let up, there’s no contrast to make them visible.
Then something shifts. A freer breath. A quieter nervous system. A more supported posture. A movement that suddenly feels easier. For a moment, there’s a reference point — and the contrast reveals what was there all along.
That moment matters more than it seems. The body can’t release a pattern it can’t perceive. Awareness has to come first.
Contrast creates awareness. Awareness creates choice.
Choice creates change.
This is part of what a session offers: not a correction applied from the outside, but an experience of something different — clear enough that the system can finally feel the pattern it had been holding, and begin to let it go.
The system cannot choose what it cannot perceive.
The clearest way to know is to feel the contrast for yourself.
